Children beauty
pageants are “supposedly” for boosting self-esteem. But under all those layers of makeup is a
child that’s probably not the pretty pageant princess you see. Children beauty pageants are a bad
idea. First of all, it doesn’t boost self-esteem,
it lowers it, the glamour can turn little girls into brats and chemicals in
makeup and hair sprays are bad for their health.
All the time
in front of a big crowd should boost your self-esteem, right? Not really.
Especially, when you’re wearing about a pound of makeup. It actually lowers self-esteem, if the child
isn’t wearing the glamorous clothing and makeup. According to ForceChange.com, pressuring a
child to promote materialistic values such a glamour, actually demotes
self-esteem and causes many other problems.
After the
pageant moms pamper their children, it’s really hard to go back to a normal
life with all the challenges. When
pageant girls come back to the normal world, they’ll throw fits, if they don’t
get what they want or are fed up.
Christy O’Shoney, a spectator from Honey Boo Boo’s interview on the
tonight show says that Honey Boo Boo was so fed up with her mother, that she
hit her mother.
Lastly,
makeup and hair spray is harmful for everyone.
To make matters worse, they use it on young children. Makeup is bad for your skin and causes
wrinkles and pigmented spots. Hairspray
stunts growth, phthalates and plasticizers are common chemicals in hair spray
that can act as hormone disrupters. For
an adult it’s no biggie, but for a growing girl the effect of hair spray can be
permanent. According to Wikipedia,
phthalates are also linked to many diseases such as breast cancer and Endocrine
disruption.
These
reasons support that child pageants should be banned. Children shouldn’t be used to show off to big
crowds.
