Literary Essay

Some people are born with deformities and disabilities(kids who are disabled or have facial anomalies), but does that mean you should treat them differently (an outcast)?  In the book Wonder (Wonder cover) by R.J. Palacio (RJ Palacio) , Auggie starts going to Middle school (school building).  Auggie is very nervous because he’s afraid that everyone will tease him (kids bullying).  Some people might think that it’s just a story about some kid with facial deformities (Picture of Auggie).  But I think it’s much more than that.  I think when R.J. Palacio (RJ Palacio) wrote Wonder (wonder cover), she wanted the reader to infer an important message (important message).  Wonder (wonder cover) teaches us that you should accept everyone no matter what they look like(Kids hanging out). (7)

In the beginning of the Jack Chapter (picture of kid), he expresses how much he doesn't want to tour Auggie.  One day his mom gets a call from Mr. Tushman (mom on the phone).  Mr. Tushman was calling to see if Jack could give the new kid a tour of the school.  He’s pretty open to it until his mom says “’I guess there’s something wrong with his face’” (Mom talking).  After that he says NO (text bubble saying No).  It reminds him of a memory (thought bubble).  In that memory, he is at Carvel and utters an “Uhh!” when he sees Auggie’s facial deformities (Auggie's face). "'If I don't have to do it,' I said,'I don't want to do it.'".  He tells his mom how Auggie is "deformed" and how he can't do it.  But then he realizes how sympathetic he is that Auggie has to deal with bullies like Julian Albany (picture of another kid who looks like a bully) and decides to give it a try.  Little did he know that they would end up as best friends (friends).  Jack starts hanging out with Auggie all the times.  This shows Jack accepting Auggie (Auggie face) even though he has a deformity, but he doesn't just accept Auggie, but he cares for Auggie. (13)

Summer is a really nice person (picture of a kid), so she decides to sit with Auggie during lunch on the first day of school (2 kids at a lunch table).  She doesn't really mind Auggie's face, but people tease her about how she hangs out with the "Zombie Kid (picture of zombie)" and tell her how she would be so much more popular (people talking) if she didn't hang out with Auggie.  Since Auggie found out that Mr. Tushman asked some people to be nice to him and to be his friend, he sort of doubts that Summer is really his friend (sad face).  But after an intence argument (2 people arguing), he discovers that she is a true friend.  Summer didn't care how he looked, she looked deeper (bright light) and found that he is actually a nice person and someone who would be a great friend.  This shows acceptance because Summer sees Auggie as a friend not someone with a deformity. (6)

For some people, it takes a while before they'll show acceptance.  An example is Amos(picture of kid).  He isn't Auggie's friend in the beginning of the story but in the end, he accepts Auggie as a friend (friends).  Amos used to be a cool kid who didn't associate with people like Auggie (2 groups of children)  because he's too cool.  But then when Auggie is being bullied by older kids at the Nature Reserve(Nature Reserve), he steps out and shows that he's a real friend (kids standing up for people).  “’Just leave them alone, dude’ Amos repeated calmly.”  After that incident Amos starts being really nice and finally accepts Auggie as a good friend (friends).  Not as someone who has a facial deformity (Auggie pic) or isn't normal. (8)

As we look at acceptance, we can see that it helps us make more friends (friends meeting each other) and meet more people.  If we look deep into someone (bright light), we can always find a reason to accept them as a friend (friends).  I think without acceptance you would always live in your own bubble that is isolated (person in a bubble) from everyone else.  For me, acceptance is the key to making friends (making friends) because you’ll never turn down a friend.  If we learn to accept everyone as a friend, the world (world) would become a more peaceful place. The Indus and Ganges River, were ideal locations for settlement for many reasons.  First of all, they were both sources of water which were key to human survival or else, we'd be come dehydrated.  Flooding of rivers also causes the water to be very fertile which is good for farming.  Farming allows the settlers to develop a stable food supply.  Rivers can also be use as water highways that can transport goods and people up or downstream.

It was Friday, and we all know what Fridays are for.  Partying with your friends.

"Hurry up and text Mia," Megan and Jordyn bugged.

I hastily grabbed my IPad and started texting Mia "What is Jack's phone numb".  The IPad was whisked out of my hand by Megan.

"Come on, we don't have that much time," she said.

We knew that it would take a while for Mia to respond, so we started our movie.  A few minutes later, Jack's contact was sent to us.

"Send it to me," said Jordyn.

I quickly copied, pasted and sent the contact to Jordyn.

"Ok," Jordyn said, dialing the number.

Ring, Ring, Ring went the phone.  It was dialing.  The longer we stood there watching the phone, the more anxious we became.  Ring, Ring, Ring.

I love my forensics piece, I think it's really cute and fun.  I already have it all on memory and am starting blocking.  Here's some of it:

Lilly loved school. She loved the pointy pencils. She loved the squeaky chalk. And she loved the way her boots went clickety-clickety-click down the long, shiny hallways.

Lilly loved the privacy of her very own desk. (Mine!)

She loved the fish sticks and chocolate milk every Friday in the lunchroom. (Straws make everything taste better!)

And, most of all, she loved her teacher, Mr. Slinger. (Smells a flower and hands it to him, bashfully, for you!)

Mr. Slinger was as sharp as a tack. He wore artistic shirts. He wore glasses on a chain around his neck. And he wore a different colored tie for each day of the week.

“Wow,” said Lilly. That was just about all she could say, “Wow.”

There is nothing better than a great teacher, loving school, and some brand new accessories for elementary student Lilly. But along with all of these great things, it can be hard to remember to follow the rules and show respect when we need to. Tonight I'm going to the band concert tonight and I'm really excited to perform all the songs that the 6th grade band has worked really hard to prepare.  We will be playing a a variety of songs like Royal Crown March, Rockin' Rondeau, Troika and more amazing songs.  I hope a lot of people come because I like performing in front of crowds.  I hope to see many familiar faces!

People use picture to capture special moments.  But most of the time, it feels like you can capture the meaning of the moment.  After reading the book Half a Chance by Cynthia Lord and discussing it with others, it feels like not everyone thinks of it the same way.  Some people think it's about a girl who enters a photography contest.  Some people think it's about a girl who moves in and is trying to adjust to a new home.  But I think the gist of the story is that

I woke up to the faint sound of chirping birds on my window sill.  It was the first day of Kindergarten.  All my past experiences with school have been disastrous.  Mommy says that I'm just a problem waiting to happen.  But for your information it wasn't my fault that Leila's nose decided to bleed after I hit her.  To make matters worse, she was in my Kindergarten class.  Well anyway, I'm more focused on first impressions.  My best friend Carmen told me about first impressions.  Apparently her sister said it's what people think of you by how you look and act.  I asked my big sister Scarlet about first impressions and she said that the worst thing a person can think about you is you're either ugly or a snarky brat. I didn't know what a snarky brat was but I wanted to be established as the most glamorous, fabulous, marvelous, magnificent, spectacular, remarkable, outstanding, extravagant, phenomenal, breathtaking, astounding, well you got the memo.

"Gracie, it's time to wake up," said my mom, walking into the room, "What do you want to wear?"

"I want to wear my extra sparkly green shirt, with the very poofy orange skirt and my rainbow boa," I squealed with excitement.

Everyone would be so jealous of my grand appearance, I thought.  After a breakfast fiasco (My eggs were overcooked!) we hopped into the car and drove to my School

"Good Morning, you must be Gracie.  Welcome to Kindergarten.  I'm Mrs. Daphney," she said.

"Well, I'm Gracie and I will be the goodest kid in your class," I beamed.

"I see we have to work on grammar.   Why don't you go meet some of your classmates," said Mrs. Daphney, shooing me away.

I walked into the room and immediately noticed Leila.  She was with her friends who were all wearing their chic shirts and skinny jeans.  Uhhggg.

"Oh my.  Is that Gracie, for a second I thought you were a spray painted goat.  Yet again, you do look like a goat," she giggled.

"Well you look like.... you," I mocked.

"Ok, Open your mouth wide," Said Dr. Sophie.

I was at the dentist, and if you didn't know, I hate the dentist.  They use random tools that you can't see in your mouth.  I especially hate when they slip these tool that pry your mouth open just so they can see your teeth.

"Open wider," she said.

I opened my mouth wider just to feel a sharp pain in my gum. It was a shot.

"Don't bite down or I'll have to do it again," she warned.

I kept my mouth as wide as posible throught all 3 shots.

"Does your mouth feel numb," she asked.

"Mmmh," I mummbled.

A strong numbness started to spread across the right side of my face.  After a loot of drill noises and cracking it was finally over.  They too this thing that they call a "raincoat" out of my mouth.  Thank God, I thought.  The raincoat caused a excruciating pain.  But the pain didn't stop.  In the end, I had a cavity filled and a tooth pulled out.  Right now my mouth is still in throbbing pain and is bleeding.  I hope the numbness wears away.

I am so excited to go to Ohio tomorrow for Science Olympiad, then again I am very nervous about the competition its self.  I feel pretty prepared, but you never know what may happen especially in a competitive Science Olympiad tournament like Wright State.  I am not sure, but I have been told that some of the best teams go to Wright State like Solom Middle school (OH) and that it's sort of a mini Nationals.  My wishes for Wright State are to place in my events and also to have BCS place too.

After fighting breast cancer for 2 years, Mrs. Fitz lost the battle last Friday.  Her death makes me feel very sad.  Mrs. Fitz was an amazing teacher and even though she wasn't my teacher, she was one of my favorite teachers.  She was very enthusiastic even when she was sick.  She inspired many people including myself to never let something, like cancer get you down, and to always stay hopeful. And because of her I know how supportive our community is.  During the Walk for Fitz, I noticed many people who have never even spoken to Mrs. Fitz were willing to help out and donate.  Even though Mrs. Fitz has passed, her spirit will always be with us.  RIP Mrs. Fitz <3
