Wonder Essay 2nd Draft

Some people are born with deformities and disabilities, but does that mean you should treat them differently?  In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio Auggie starts going to school.  Auggie is very nervous because he’s afraid everyone will tease him.  Some people might think that it’s just a story about some kid with facial deformities.  But I think it’s much more than that.  I think when R.J. Palacio wrote Wonder, she wanted the reader to infer an important message.  I think that Wonder teaches us that you should accept everyone no matter what.

In the beginning of the Jack Chapter, he expresses how much he doesn't want to tour Auggie.  One day his mom gets a call from Mr. Tushman.  Mr. Tushman was calling to see if Jack could give the new kid a tour of the school.  He’s pretty open to it until his mom says “’I guess there’s something wrong with his face’”. "'If I don't have to do it,' I said, 'I don't want to do it.'".  He tells his mom how Auggie is "deformed" and how he can't do it.  But then he realizes how sympathetic he is that Auggie has to deal with bullies like Julian Albans and decides to give it a try.  Little did he know that they would end up as best friends.  Jack starts hanging out with Auggie all the times.  This shows Jack accepting Auggie even though he has a deformity.

Summer is a really nice person, so she decides to sit with Auggie during lunch on the first day of school.  She doesn't really mind Auggie's face, but people tease her about how she hangs out with the "Zombie Kid".  Since Auggie found out that Mr. Tushman asked some people to be nice to him, he sort of doubts that Summer is Really his friend.  Then he finds out that she is a true friend.  Summer didn’t care how he looked, she looked deeper and found that he was actually a nice person.  This shows acceptance because Summer sees Auggie as a friend not someone with a deformity.

For some people, it takes a while before they'll show acceptance.  An example is Amos.  He isn't Auggie's friend in the beginning of the story but in the end, he accepts Auggie as a friend.  Amos used to be a cool kid who didn't associate with people like Auggie because he's too cool.  But then when Auggie is being bullied by older kids at the Nature Reserve, he steps out and shows that he's a real friend.  “’Just leave them alone, dude’ Amos repeated calmly.”  After that incident Amos starts being really nice and finally accepts Auggie as a good friend.

As we look at acceptance, we can see that it helps us make more friends and meet more people.  If we look deep into someone, we can always find a reason to accept them as a friend.  I think without acceptance you would always live in your own bubble that is isolated from everyone else.  For me, acceptance is the key to making friends because you’ll never turn down a friend.  If we learn to accept everyone as a friend, the world would become a more peaceful place

Litary Essay

Some people are born with deformities and disabilities, but does that mean you should treat them differently?  In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio Auggie starts going to school.  Auggie is very nervous because he has a facial deformity and worries if he will be able to fit.  I think that Wonder teaches us that you should accept everyone no matter what.

In the beginning of the Jack Chapter, he expresses how much he doesn't want to tour Auggie. "'If I don't have to do it,' I said,'I don't want to do it.'".  He tells his mom how Auggie is "deformed" and how he can't do it.  But then he realizes how simpathetic he is that Auggie has to deal with bullies like Julian Albans and decides to give it a try.  Little did he know that they would end up as best friends.  Jack starts hanging out with Auggie all the times.  This shows Jack accepting Auggie even though he has a deformity

Summer is a really nice person, so she descides to sit with Auggie during lunch on the first day of school.  She diesn't really mind Auggie's face, but people tease her about how she hangs out with the "Zombie Kid".  Since Auggie found out that Mr. Tushman asked some people to be nice to him, he sort of doubts that Summer is Really his friend.  Then he finds out that she is a true friend.  "'You know, Summer... we pinky swore". This shows acceptance because Summer sees Auggie as a friend not someone with a deformity.

For some people, it takes a while before they'll show acceptance.  An example is Amos.  He isn't Auggie's friend in the beginning of the story but in the end, he accepts Auggie as a freind.  Amos used to be a cool kid who didn't associate with people like Auggie because he's too cool.  But then when Auggie is being bullied by older kids at the Nature Reserve, he steps out and shows that he's a real friend.  "'Yo dude,' said... yell, 'Don't stop!'" After that incident Amos starts being really nice and finally accepts Auggie as a good friend.

As we look at acceptance, we can see that it helps us make more friends and meet more people.  If we look deep into someone, we can always find a reason to accept them as a friend.  I think without acceptance you would always live in your own bubble that is isolated from everyone else.  If we learn to accept everyone as a friend, the world would become a more peaceful place.

PART 1

Hi I'm Kyla Lewis a 16 year old girl who lived in Springdale.  Springdale was known for its vivid history.  Around the year 1900, 5000 citizens were killed by a small epidemic of Pageovirus D-98.  The Pageovirus caused its victims to think that they were animals and run wild around the raggedy town.  To quarantine the infected, the Mayor ordered everyone infected to be locked up in the Springdale Prison.  The Prison was dark and murky that had been vacant for the past 100 years.
they were about to tear it down before the outbreak.  Eventually, the jail was filled with Pageovirus victims.  5 years after the disease broke out, the Springdale Jail was burnt down by their loved ones (for no reason) and never spoken about again.  10 years later, a school was built a top the ruins.

On June 12, 2014, the citizens of Springdale, crowded around the "Cochester Hall".  Everyone in town was there, including me.  I as some people say, am a very curios girl. I always have to know what  was going on.  This was an event that I could not miss.  About 1 hour ago, a shrill shriek came from inside of the school.  A call was made by Mrs. Gaffney who heard the scream.  The police found out that everyone inside had gone insane.  When I got there the police were taking some students to the "Springdale Asylum for the Mentally Ill".  The students were twitching and saying things that didn't make sense.  I could not resist a moment like this, so I decided to get some info on the scene.

"So what exactly happened," I asked a nearby officer.

"Well, about an hour ago, all the people in the building went crazy.  The bad thing is, there are still some crazy people in the school.  Those people are the people who went really psycho," said the officer, "Even I'm scared to go inside."

"Really!  Have you found a cause," I asked.

"No, not yet.  Most of the times it's a disease of something of the sort, but we just got the lab results and doesn't give the smallest hint of that so.." his voice trailed off.

"So what do you think it is that cause this sudden out burst," I asked.

"Well, at this point we don't know.  We've tried everything possible, disease, poison and more.  I mean what else is there to try," he asked.

"How about, maybe..." I said getting cut off.

"This is sort of like the incident of 1900," said an old lady.

For some reason, she looked familiar.

"The what," said the officer.

"Oh I forgot that people don't talk about it anymore.  Allow me to introduce myself, I am Marissa Periwinkle and I live on the far side of the town," said the lady.

Her voice sounded so familiar.

"Nice to meet you Mrs. Periwinkle, I'm Sheriff Brown, now tell us your theory," said the officer.

She told us about how the town had caught the Pageovirus and about how the school was built upon the site.

"So you mean to say that you think that this place is haunted," the officer laughed.

"Yes, it could be your best lead now.  I heard that your ideas had run dry," said Mrs. Periwinkle.

"Well, that is insane, ghost haunting a school," he laughed, "Hilarious!"

Mrs. Periwinkle looked un-amused at his childish behavior and casually strolled off.  I decided to take off too, it was getting late and I had to get home.

"Excuse me," said a voice from behind me.

It was Mrs. Periwinkle.

"I didn't catch your name back there," she said.

"Oh I'm Kyla," I replied.

"Ok Kyla, you know that story I told you, well it's all true.  My grandmother lived through the tragedy," Mrs. Periwinkle whispered.

"Really," I exclaimed

"I have proof," said Mrs. Periwinkle, "Wait a minute, is your grandmother Janet Lewis?"

"Yeah, that's my Nana," I replied.

"I'm you grandma's friend.  Janet was a very brave lady.  She risked her own life to save Springdale by warning people about the prophecy,"she said happily.

"What prophecy," I asked

"Oh dear, I forgot how little you know on the situation.  Well, right after the tragedy, a well known prophet came into town to help the Mayor.  When he was in a private meeting with the mayor, he told about the town's terrible fate.  The future is gloomy, one special group started by a special mind, will bring light," she replied, "I believe that you have something to do with it."

"What if I'm not the girl,"I asked.

"Does it matter, we can always try," she replied, very mysteriously.

"Well,  I must be getting back home soon.  My parents will be wondering where I am.  How about we meet at the school tomorrow at 9," I asked.

"That sounds divine," she said, skipping off into the sunset.

PART 2

Something just didn't seem right about Mrs. Periwinkle.  She was nice and all, but everything about her seemed mysterious.  At the end of our conversation it sort of got creepy.  She started staring at me intensely as if she was trying to shoot lasers from her eyes at me, her breathing got heavier and her voice started cracking.  All night, I was up debating weather or not to go meet her in the morning.  Was she just a "Wacko" who escaped from the Asylum or an old lady who knew the truth behind .  In the end, my adventurous side go the better of me.  The next day at approximately 9:00 A.M., I arrived at the school to find Mrs. Periwinkle sitting on the bench in front of the school.

"I heard they abandoned the case last night," she said sadly.

"Oh really," I wondered.

"They had no other leads so they closed the case," she replied.

"So what were you thinking about the case," I asked.

"Well, if you're up for it, I was going to stay a night in the school," she replied.

Ohhh, this was risky, but I loved a great adventure.  I needed to know the details.  The anxiety was literally killing me!!!! Wait...  This could also mean my death.  I am only 16.  I can't die young.  Wait...  But you only live once, right?I'll Just have to make the most of my life.  But, but, but, but.

"Sure," I blurted.

That, I started to regret.

"Oh perfect.  I have everything set up.  Just follow me," she said excitedly.

She casually walked into the building.  It looked like a Medieval Castle from Spain.  There were dazzlingly vivid painted glass windows and the architecture was just amazing.  The arched ceiling was covered in murals.  Not one single thing lack precision and detail.  But as we got further into the building, doors were flung opened, revealing classrooms and closets.  They added some contrast to the beautiful halls. Desks were overturned, paper was scattered all over the floor, the windows were smashed and cabinets were on their sides.  It all just looked  like a pile of rubbish.

"You seem so quiet Kyla.  So tell me about yourself," Mrs. Periwinkle smiled.

"Well," my voice trailed.

"What are your hobbies," she asked.

"Well, I figure skate, play the piano," my voice trailed off again.

Why was I giving information to a stranger?  STRANGER DANGER!

"When I was your age," she started.

Great.  A story about her past.  I don't even listen to my own grandma when she talks about her childhood.  This is what I hear: Bla, bla, bla, bla, bla.  I'm really no in the mood for a story about the past, when there's so much more I could be worrying about.  I mean really, would you rather listen to an old woman drone on about her life or would you rather learn about ghosts haunting a nearby school.  Duh, ghosts win by a long shot.

"... and that's when I realized that elephants don't eat woodchucks," she said, or at least that's what I thought she said.

"Wow what a powerfu-," I started, but then noticed a girl running down the halls.

She sped down the hallway like a bullet, straight towards us.  Just as she entered my personal bubble, she stopped.

"Go away or we will torture you," she whispered, her voice was smooth and dream like.

"What," I replied.

"You have been warned," she evilly chuckled.

Just then her eyes rolled back into her head revealing just a shiny white sphere and pulled out a kitchen knife.

"If you keep sticking you nose into this case, you have the same fate as this squirrel," she laughed.

"Oh, I love this part," said Mrs. Periwinkle.

Mrs. Periwinkle's eyes also rolled back into her head.

Out of no where a squirrel nimbly ran across the floor.  Suddenly, it was grasped by the pale hand of the psycho girl.  She squeezed it so hard, I could see its face turning blue.  In no time, it was dead limp.  Then she grabbed the knife and slit the throat of the poor squirrel.  Blood splatter everywhere.  Suddenly my eyes started getting heavier and heavier and I got drowsier and drowsier.  The last thing I heard before I blacked out was a shrill laugh.

Part 3

I woke up to a horrible noise.  My ears felt like they were bleeding.  The noise then stopped and everything was dead silent.

"We know that you won't give up.  So you will face the consequences of a curious mind," said a mysterious voice.

That's when, I noticed that I was lying on a cold metal table.

"Hello Darling," said Mrs. Periwinkle, "This won't hurt a bit."

I noticed that she a syringe full of black liquid.

"No," I yelled.

Mrs. Periwinkle flinched as if my words hurt her like knives.

"I swear.  You'll only end up like  my apprentice here," she said, pointing to the little girl.

"I was just like you.  Now I don't regret a thing," said the girl.

"NO! GET AWAY FROM ME YOU PSYCHOPATHS," I screamed.

They both fell backwards.  Was my commanding voice hurting them.

"Just 1 little shot," begged the girl.

"I SAID NO.  GET AWAY FROM ME.  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH," I screamed.

Mrs. Periwinkle vanished into thin and and the girl did too.  Just then, a white vapor rose from her mouth.

"You're the one we've been looking for all along," said Mrs. Periwinkle reappearing.

"Who's we," I snapped.

I stood frozen looking at the figures that poured in from the walls and through the door.

"Is sh-sh-she the one to destroy us-s-s-s," question a voice.

"Shes only the leader of their little band of misfits," croaked another, "Don't worry child, we have more in store."

In the blink of an eye they all vanished.  Suddenly, there was a deafening growl followed by a shrill shriek.  That's when I thought I was hallucinating because the windows shattered, spaying glass in every which way.  Like any sensible person I backed out of the room.

"Help me," screamed a voice.

I turned around to see a group of people whose faces were scarred, battered and disoriented.  Their clothes were ripped and frayed.  They looked so... How do I put this nicely.  Grotesque, diabolical, horrendous, inhuman.  That's when I noticed the boy that they were chasing.  I watched as the foul creatures inched towards him.  I watched as his scream grew louder and louder.  I watched as his face became filled with horror.  He took a step back and slipped on the sleek red carpet.  I could not stand to see him at the hand of the creatures.  So I sprinted to him and pulled him off the ground.  We ran and ran and ran, until we found a classroom and locked the door.

"Thanks for saving me back there," he said.

"No problem," I panted.

"I'm Will," he said, "And you."

"Kyla," I replied, "When did you get here."

"Well I saw those monsters and they chased me right into the building," he explained.

Thump. Thump. Thump.  Suddenly a hand smashed through the door.  It was followed by a hard kick.

"Uh Oh," I panicked.

Before I knew it, the door was down.  The creatures inched towards us until Will and I were literally hugging the corner.

"Get away from them," yelled a voice.

The sound of gunshots rang throughout the room.  One by one, the "Things" dropped DEAD.  Down from the ceiling support beams, sprang a figure dressed in black.  I watched in awe as she skillfully landed on his or her feet.

"I can't express my thanks," I started.

There was another loud growl from the hallways.

"If you want to, run," she whispered.

She grabbed my sleeve and dragged me into the hallway.  The ghosts were back.

"Who are you two," one of them asked, "I thought we only had to deal with that Kyla."

The ghost wiggled her bony finger at Will and the girl dressed in black.

"I'm Amber, and you grandma, look like an old wrinkled prune," the girl in black spat.

"I'm William.  Mrs...," whispered Will.

"Don't Mrs. me.  I have more power than you cowards will ever have," she shrieked.

"Actually you're a coward.  Torturing innocent children," Amber screamed.

"Innocent," she shrieked, "Tell that_"

With the wave of the bony hand the world around me began to spin like a pin-wheel.

"What's happening," I exclaimed, but instead of answering my questions, the ghosts just cackled away.

Diziness overpowered me.  Before I knew it I was out like a light bulb.

PART 4

I woke up to the sound of blue birds chirping and totally forgot about the situation that happened before.  That's when I noticed that I was still in the school.  All the scenes came like water breaking through a dam, breaking through the wall that made me forget.

"So this wasn't a dream," Amber yelled, "I'm stuck with you and that wierdo Will!"
